Insane, gory, violent, crazy – but not without meaning. Absolutely perfect. As grotesque as “Taxidermia” is, it is a brilliant film and it is also very powerful. The scenes are explicit and may cause one to be uncomfortable but here is a film that resonates truth.
Gyorgy Palfi’s grotesque tale of three generations of men, including an obese speed eater, an embalmer of gigantic cats, and a man who shoots fire out of his penis. Nothing in cinema’s history can be compared to this. Not a single movie was as violent as this one is sometimes. In some scenes it reminded me of Pasolini’s Salo. But the disgusting and the violent scenes are all meaningful; probably they are a perverse, misshapen mirror of the society. We can’t say, that the leading characters are perverted, because everybody is as much perverted, as the ones we see. Fortunately this unique movie is presented by a big amount of humor – and we simply can’t take the characters totally seriously. Taxidermia is a milestone in film-making, and was worth every single cent of the Sundance money, from which it was made.
